Nyungwe Forest National Park
Is a spectacular protected area located in the southwestern part of Rwanda, bordering Burundi to the south and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.
Where is Nyungwe Forest?
Nyungwe Forest Covering an area of approximately 1,020 square kilometers, Nyungwe Forest is one of the oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests in Africa, renowned for its rich biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and unique ecological features. Nyungwe Forest is home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, including over 1,000 plant species, 13 primate species, and 75 mammal species. It is particularly known for its primate populations, which include chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, and L'Hoest's monkeys. The forest is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 300 bird species recorded within its boundaries, including numerous endemic and migratory species.
Nyungwe Forest is one of the few remaining montane rainforests in Central Africa, with some areas dating back to the prehistoric era. Its ancient forests are characterized by towering trees, dense undergrowth, and a complex network of streams and waterfalls, creating a lush and verdant environment that supports a wide variety of plant and animal life.
